as our exams got finished we booked tickets to chikmagalur (CKM). we purchased some fruits, bread, biscuits, water, packed our backpacks and boarded bus to CKM on june 4th at 10:30pm. srikantha who lives in shimoga around 90kms from CKM boarded a bus to CKM at 2:30am. all of us reached CKM by 4:00am.
as we had planned we had to go to SARPADAARI, an arch where the trek to MG starts. all the busses which are going to bababudangiri (also called as datta peeta) go to sarpadaari.
sarpadaari starting point of trek
we hired an auto to go to sarpadaari, he asked 200 bucks, we had no other option as we paid him 150rs. (actually there was a bus at 7:30, we were getting late so we got into an auto)..
we reached sarpadaari which is 17kms from CKM by 6:55, took some snaps and started our trek at sharp 7:00.
its around 7-8kms of trek to reach the top of MG, initial part of the climb is not that steep.. later on it gets steep.. our pace of climb was very good. for a normal speed of climb it will take around 2:30 hours to climb to MG.
after some 70mins we cross a shola and 10 mins after that a huge rock formation comes in the way. the actual path tries to avoid the rock by bypassing it from left side. after the rock the path is not that steep. we reached the rock in 60mins.
after the rock another 1 hour of trek wil take to you a big tree and a nandi idol which is right sign which shows you are in right path.
we decided to have our breakfast at that point and as it was raining we needed a shelter. we took 30 mins of rest. on a clear day one can see top of MG from the nandi idol. as we couldn't the top we thought there is some more part of the mountain to climb.
we started again and after 5mins we could see a cave on our right side. i was jumping with joy cos i knew we are nearly on top of MG. another 2 mins of walk took us to another nandi idol and we were on top of mullayyanagiri :)
actually it took us only 2 hrs to limb 7kms.
there is temple and tomb of mullappaswami and a temple of lord shiva, a priest and his family lives there who'll provide food if u wish to have. we took an hour of rest, decided to reach base of bababudangiri (GIRI) as early as possible.
there are two paths from the back door of the temple. as the left one was well defined we decided to take the left path.. we could see nothing other than mist all over.. we went down in that path for around 3kms. there was the house who told that we are in the wrong path :(
another 3 kms up the hill took us bak to temple. now we took thr path on roghtside.. after another 1 km we lost the path again :( we couldn't see anything 5mts away from us..
again we came bak to temple and asked 1 person to take us to the correct path. he asked some money and we agreed. we started at12pm.
actually we were on the correct path 2nd time but we couldn't see the path as it was covered with mist.
we crossed 2 mountains and that person told he'll return back. we gave him 40rupees for the help.
we thought we are half the way to base of GIRI. no we were not. we crossed 5 more mountains and aah we reached the luch point that is base of GIRI at 2:00..
the road to bababudangiri from CKM crosses this point. there is small shelter we ate packs of bread and waited for the bus to CKM. prob again there was no bus, no jeep. no vehicle stopped for us :(. we got the bus to CKM to 5pm. we reached ckm by 5:30pm. booked our tickets back to bangalore. srikantha went back to shimoga. totally we trekked for around 24kms. we got into the bus at 11:00 pm and we were in bangalore by 4 am next day
trek length: 16kms , 1 or 2 days
level: easy to moderate
